Let them call you foolish, simple, least,
with nothing to show and nothing to leave.
If the price of their crown is a crooked tongue,
or bending your neck to an arrogant lord,
then keep your bread crust, hard and unsung,
and leave them to squabble over the sword.
A cloak can be stolen, an estate can be burned,
the crowd will revoke the cheers they lend;
what never was yours can never be earned,
and whatever you borrow comes to an end.
So let them believe that you lost the game,
confusing your quiet with cowardice or fright;
they carry the hollow weight of a name,
while you guard the citadel, whole in the night.
Better to sit in the dust and be free,
unmoved by the laughter, untamed by the rod,
a failure in the eyes that refuse to see,
and a sovereign man in the court of Creation.
