Archaeologists discovered the tomb of Pharaoh Thutmose II in Egypt

Two weeks ago, British archaeologist Piers Litherland announced the significant finding of a rock cut pharaoh's tomb in Egypt


This find is the first pharaonic burial site found since Tutankhamun's in 1922, making it a significant breakthrough in recent years


Litherland's team found a burial tomb of the pharaoh Thutmose II underneath a waterfall in the Theban mountains in Luxor, about 3km west of the Valley of the Kings



The team believe that the tomb was in poor condition, flooded and emptied out within six years of the pharaoh's death in 1479BC


He suspects that this tomb will contain the young pharaoh's mummified body and grave goods


Archaeologists believe that this second tomb has been hidden for 3500 years beneath limestone, ruble and ash that looked like part of the mountain


The team is attempting to remove the rocks and limestone by hand


Inside, the team found unmistakably signs of a royal tomb, inscriptions from the 'Amduat', which is an ancient funeral text that is used for pharaohs, fragments of alabaster jars bearing the names of Thutmose II and his wife Hatshepsut, and a blue painted ceiling with yellow stars
