What is a constellation?

According to NASA, a constellation is a group of stars that forms a particular shape in the sky and has been given a name. That shape, of course, is up for interpretation depending on the culture.

The Pleiades in Greek mythology:

The Pleiades, like all of our constellations, gets its name from the ancient Greeks. As told in many of the Greek mythology stories, the Pleiades are seven sisters born to the Titan Atlas (the guy who holds the world on his shoulders) and Pleione, an Oceanid nymph, or divine water spirit.

Of these seven sisters, six of them consorted with the gods — three with Zeus, two with Poseidon, and one with Ares — and they all had famous children, or those children sired famous Greek heroes.

Because of this, the gods placed them in the sky. The seventh sister, however, consorted with a mortal, Sisyphus. The gods took pity on that seventh sister and allowed her to be with her sisters in the sky, but because she married a mortal, they made her star the faintest of them all.

Another Greek story tells that the seven sisters were companions of Artemis, the goddess of hunting and wilderness. One day they were spotted by Orion, who greatly desired them and started to chase after them. The sisters, who did not wish to have Orion’s attentions, begged and pleaded with the gods to stop him. The gods took pity on them and put them in the sky. Orion, however, was placed among the stars for other reasons and he can still be seen chasing them through the sky, never able to catch them. Seven Scared Rites from the White Buffalo Calf Woman:

The White Buffalo Calf Woman is a prominent figure in Lakota tradition, Mother of all creation, who came as her brought teachings and the sacred pipe (Chanupa) to the Lakota people. She is associated with the Seven Sacred Rites and is also linked to the prophecy of her return to restore harmony and spiritual balance

These rites are: the Sacred Pipe Ceremony (Canupa), the Sweat Lodge (Inipi), the Vision Quest (Hanblecha), the Sun Dance (Wiwangwacipi), the Making of Relatives (Hunkapi), the Girl's Coming of Age Ceremony (Ishna Ta Awi Cha Lowan), and the Keeping of the Soul (Wanagi Yuhapi). These rites are important for individual and community development, and they mark key life stages

Cherokee legend of the Seven Sisters:

If you are interested in reading the story, the inscription on the plaque has been included here: "Legend says Cherokees came from the area of the Pleiades Constellation or the Seven Sisters.  Star Woman didn't like the way the brown skinned people were being treated, so she brought them to Earth.  She fell from the sky and broke open man stepped forth.  Her other sisters were mad because they considered these people their slaves.  When she returned they hid her behind a veil so no one could see her clearly.  To this day you can only see her through a telescope, thus her Cherokee name U-LI-SI-GI the "Dark One"."

The Seven Sisters by various Native American cultures:

The "Seven Sisters" star cluster, also known as the Pleiades, has several different names and meanings in Native American cultures. In some traditions, they are referred to as "Seven Sisters," "Seven Girls," or "Maidens in the Sky." However, specific names and stories vary by tribe, such as the Kiowa story of the girls fleeing bears, or the Ojibwe story of the "Hole in the Sky."

Here's a closer look at some of the Native American interpretations:

  • Kiowa:

The Kiowa believe the Pleiades are seven maidens who were saved from giant bears by being lifted into the sky by the Great Spirit.

  • Ojibwe:

The Ojibwe call the Pleiades "Bugonagiizhig," which translates to "Hole in the Sky," and see it as a spiritual doorway between Earth and sky.

  • Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota:

These tribes call the Pleiades "Wiçinyanna Sakowin/Wiçincala Sakowin," meaning "Seven Girls," and also see it as the head of a buffalo-like constellation called Tayamni.

  • Navajo:

The Navajo refer to the Pleiades as "Dilyéhé," which is associated with the planting season, as it disappears from the night sky during the spring planting time and reappears during the fall harvest.

  • Other Native American cultures:

The Pleiades are also known as "Sweating Stones" (Madoo'asinik) in some Native American cultures, and "Qullqa" (storehouse) in Quechua.

Lakota legend of the Devils Tower with Seven girls:

A Lakota legend tells the story of the constellation as seven girls who went out to play and were spotted by giant bears who chased them. The girls climbed on top of a large rock (what is known today as Devil’s Tower in Wyoming) and prayed to the Great Spirit for their safety. The rock suddenly rose up towards the sky and as the bears started to climb it, they left deep claw marks in the sides of it. But the rock became too steep for them and they never got to the girls. When the girls reached the sky, they were turned into stars.

Seven goddesses in India

In the MatsyaPurana, it is mentioned that Lord Shiva created seven goddesses to combat Andhakasura, who had the ability to duplicate from each drop of his blood that falls on the ground. The Saptamatrikas drank up the blood that spouted from Andhaka and helped Lord Shiva defeat the demon. There is a beautiful sculptural panel depicting this at the Kailas temple in Ellora.

In the DeviMahatmya, it is said that goddess Durga created seven terrible Goddesses from herself and with their help slaughtered the demon army of Mahishasura. In this version of the story, the Saptamatrikas sucked all the blood of the demon Raktabija.

The Hindu Seven Sisters

The "Hindu Seven Sisters" refers to both a geological and a mythological concept. Geographically, it refers to the seven contiguous states of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. Mythologically, it refers to the seven goddesses associated with protection, particularly of women and children, and are known in various regional Hindu traditions.

Later in the Mahabharata; when absorption of these indigenous goddesses in the Hindu pantheon was initiated, a standardized group of seven goddesses – the Saptamatrikas, Shaktis or powers of Hindu gods are mentioned as Brahmi, Maheshvari, Kaumari, Vaishnavi, Varahi, Indrani, Chamunda.

The northeastern region of India is often referred to as the "Seven Sisters" and "One Brother," which includes the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura as the "Seven Sisters," with Sikkim being referred to as the "Brother.

The Seven Sisters of the Chinese legend

When Weaver Girl fell in love with the mortal Cowherd, their union incurred heavenly wrath. As punishment, the two were banished to either side of the Milky Way and could only meet once a year – on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. This painting 天河配 (“Rendezvous in the Milky Way”, c. late 19th–c. early 20th century) depicts the reunion of the couple at the heavenly river (天河), which symbolises the Milky Way. The Pleiades in Australian Aboriginal Culture

On the other side of the world, an Australian Aboriginal tale also consists of seven sisters. These sisters, also known as the Karatgurk, were spirits who roamed the earth and guarded a highly sought after secret: fire.

They each carried with them a digging stick that had a coal on the top. Many wanted their secret, but the sisters would never share their coals. One day, Crow decided that enough was enough, and he would take it from them.

Through a series of tricks and immense cunning, he was able to get a hold of the coals and the sisters chased after him. When Crow was safely away, all the other animals demanded he share.

An altercation followed and the coals flew out of Crow’s grip, resulting in his feathers charring, and a fire that raged across the Australian landscape.

Because their secret could no longer be contained, the Karatgurk were swept up into the sky, and the burning ends of their digging sticks can still be seen as the Pleiades constellation. (Source: Star Stories: Constellation Tales from Around the World by Anita Ganeri.)

The "Seventh Son of the Seventh Son"

A concept found in folklore, particularly in Irish traditions, suggesting that such a son would possess special abilities or powers. These powers are often associated with healing, foresight, and the ability to influence others through their gaze.

The seventh son of a seventh son is gifted as a healer. The seventh son of a seventh son is part of a more general phenomenon known as the "cure" (sometimes also called the "charm"). Belief in the efficacy of seventh son healers and other folklore related to healing persisted to the 20th century in parts of Ireland.

The Seven Sisters waterfall in Norway

The "Seven Sisters" refers to a famous group of seven waterfalls located in the Geirangerfjord in Norway. These waterfalls are known for their dramatic height, with the tallest having a free fall of 250 meters (820 ft). The falls are most impressive during the spring and early summer months when snow melt creates powerful water flow. The Seven Sisters are a popular tourist attraction, often viewed by boat on the fjord.
